Goodbye 2009! Hello 2010!
by Julie Hamilton | in Events

We want to say thank you to all of you who have helped bring so many blessings our way in 2009! This year we have met and worked with some of the neatest people that have made our year just fantastic and we've had a chance to cultivate friendships and relationships that have begun in years past and take those to new level.  In 2010, we are looking forward to "moving forward" even more as we are getting our business in line and ready for 2010 to be an awesome year! In the coming months, keep yours eye open for more surprises and good changes!

We pray that all of you may have a very, very blessed 2010, full of good health, great love, and much prosperity.  We look forward to talking to you in the coming year and seeing what new adventures will abound!

It was SO hard to narrow down, but I finally got together about 10 of my very favorite images from 2009.  OK, so I wasn't able to keep it to 10, but we'll just pretend I did! So, here are a few of my favorites from this year, hope you enjoy this mix of engagements, weddings, events, and other images as much as I did! As you can see, we had tons of fun this year!

Carissa & Art's engagement session in the mustard flowers of Napa Valley

Now this was one snowy engagement session with Natalie & Eric! I can't believe she braved the snow at Big Bear in these spaghetti straps!

One of my favorite's of Janay and Troy at their Disneyland Hotel wedding!

Every so often, we get to take a break from "love" and get down to shooting the nitty gritty world of BMX for a charity called the Active Force Foundation, dedicated to building 4 wheeled extreme biking equipment for those whose disabilities may keep them from enjoyed extreme sports.  It's a nice change of pace! Hey, photojournalism is photojournalism.

This image cracks me up! Yes, that is the bride's family and the groom Mihai on the right!

Love these images from San Francisco City Hall.  Spectacular lighting by Got Light?

Beautiful artistry at a Jenne Hohn event at Solage Calistoga.  Lighting by Got Light?

Goodbye 2009--We enjoyed you thoroughly while you were here and will always remember you fondly, but now it's on to bigger and better things ;)

Being a novice (at something else BESIDES photography!).....and how it affects your business..
by Julie Hamilton | in uncategorized

Yesterday, I realized just how much I hate being a novice at something!  I had an appointment with a consultant...working on a major life-altering project that I've never attempted before and I needed some help.  All morning, I was dreading his coming and then I realized why...because I know nothing about the project I am venturing into.  In this particular field, I am a novice. My head was full of questions, and yet I felt that I didn't even know what questions to ask! Where to begin? What should I be considering?  What if I miss a major question that should have been asked and screw everything up by missing a major element? Can I ever do this? There were all the thoughts that were running through my mind.

So, the consultant came to our home.  Jim was so, so nice and friendly, but I felt like crying.  When we started, I could feel tears flooding up to the brim of my eyes (which I hope he didn't see!) and I said to him "I have zero experience with this project and I'm not even sure where to begin...."  I felt scared and nervous and insecure.

He said the thing that I had been longing to hear, "Let me put your fears at ease..." Jim went on to explain how he would tell me everything I needed to know and help me to be prepared.  He gave me a starting point, a few questions, and as we went along in discussing our ideas, he would help direct and give me a few tips here and there.  Throughout our consultation, yes, I found myself sighing deep sighs (a sign to me that I am stressed), but by the time he left two hours later, I felt at least a little more prepared and ready to continue on with the next steps.  A little more confident.

And how does this relate to our business specifically?  Well, as soon as Jim walked out the door, in came a great potential client for a wedding photography consultation.  I sat there reflecting on how I felt just two hours ago, and I realized that she might have been feeling a little bit of the same nervousness or fears about coming to our home for her first wedding photography consultation.  We really have to remember that in this industry, almost every one of our clients is a first-timer!  That's part of what we love about wedding photography!  We strive to remember that when we communicate with them, to guide the consultation so that we cover all the major elements that need to be covered, attempting to address all questions in advance, and to simply put, "ease their fears."  The majority of our clients are just beginning to enter what I call the "wild world of weddings" and we want to be there to help them along the way!

So, in short, it's good for all of us to be in the position of novice every once in a while, if not to learn something new, just to keep us humble and help us understand what our own clients are going through and how we can better meet their needs.

Think about it! Try something new and let me know how it goes!

Onward,

Julie

PS OK, just one picture...here's a sweet picture Damion took of the girls on Christmas...

A Vintage "Day After"
by Julie Hamilton | in Day After

This vintage inspired Day After Session with Carissa & Art was a dream come true! We were so excited to be able to shoot this session with Carissa & Art on a private estate in Napa.  Many thanks to the estate owner Tony and his lovely wife, who were so gracious to let us use their beautiful collection of cars and were so helpful in moving the cars, and even gathering up props like a dirty hankie, a wrench, and a real Tommy Gun.  We were also very grateful to have the talents of hair stylist Shaina Cook and makeup artist Amanda Krueger on our team as well...they made Carissa look magnificent and we couldn't have done this shoot without them!

The best thing about this session was seeing Carissa & Art really shine! When we began their engagement session almost a year ago, they were a little uneasy about being in front of the camera, but did well.  They were awesome at their wedding in August, a little more confident, and now with this Day After, Carissa was rockin it like a model (and you too Art!)  We love to see that transformation happen with time, experience, and trust all growing!

Without further ado, here are some of my favorite images, and don't forget to

I love how you can see the autumn vineyards in the background of Art's portrait!

I think this is one of my very favorites!
